You Won’t Throw Away Apple Peels Again After You Read This

An Apple a Day…

Apples are the ultimate convenience snack, but they’re also a nutritional powerhouse. A medium apple clocks in at around 100 calories with 4 grams of fiber—and here’s the kicker: half of that fiber is in the peel. The skin is also where the highest concentration of antioxidants lives. Modern research continues to show that the polyphenols in apple peels may protect against heart disease, diabetes, and even neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Plus, that fiber is a “prebiotic,” meaning it feeds the good bacteria in your gut. If you’re looking for an easy win for weight control and digestive health, the apple is your best friend.

Don’t Toss the Peel!

I get it—sometimes the kids are “anti-peel,” or a specific baking recipe calls for peeled fruit. But in an effort to reach a zero-waste kitchen, those peels are gold! Whether you leave them whole, chop them, or puree them, they are a secret weapon for adding texture and nutrients.

Here are my favorite ways to upcycle apple peels:

  • Boost Your Smoothies: Toss them in the blender for extra fiber without changing the flavor.
  • Dehydrate into Chips: A crunchy, kid-friendly snack.
  • Flavor Your Tea: Simmer peels with a cinnamon stick for a natural fall-flavored brew.
  • The “Hidden” Glow-Up: Finely mince peels and stir them into oatmeal, yogurt, or even dips.

Pro-Tip: How to Store & Save

If you’re prepping apples ahead of time, don’t let the peels turn brown and sad. Toss them with a splash of lemon or orange juice—the Vitamin C acts as a natural antioxidant to keep them bright. You can store them in a sealed bag in the fridge for a couple of days or pop them in the freezer for your next smoothie.

A Note on the “Dirty Dozen”: Yes, apples are often on the list for pesticide residue. If it’s in your budget, go organic. If not? Don’t sweat it. The massive health benefits of eating fruit far outweigh the risks of pesticide exposure. Just give them a good scrub and enjoy!
