Papanash are usually sweet cheese doughnuts, patties or cooked dumplings.
The most common Papanash are the deep fried Doughnuts. I make them every now and then, but personally, I like this version boiled with a cruble topping or the fried with cranberries better.

Crunchy Crumble Dumplings
Servings
Ingredients
- 2 cups Farmer cheese or Ricotta cheese
- 4 Tbs sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- A bit of lemon and orange zest
- 3 Tbs sifted flour
- 3-4 Tbs Semolina flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 3/4 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup sugar to taste
- 1/2 cup ground nuts of choice
- a pinch of cinnamon optional
- lemon zest optional
Instructions
- Boil water in a deep saucepan.
- Form little oval shaped balls, roll them in sifted flour and dump them in boiling water. They will sink to the bottom and float after several minutes. Continue cooking after they float for a couple more minutes and then drain them and prepare the crumble.
- In a frying pan, melt butter (amount is up to you), add bread crumbs, a bit of sugar and ground nuts and mix it all together. Heat this crumble for several minutes on medium heat and then add the cooked dumplings and roll them in the crumbs until they are fully covered.

I’m not sure I know what you are referring to, Ruchel, but date-syrup is very popular here and is called Silan (or as Arabs call it Dibs Tamr = Dvash Tamar.
It is used as a sweetener for cakes, cookies and salad dressings but I don;t think there s a specific cabbage salad with silan dressing.
The date molasses (make sure you buy the one that consists of 100% dates with no added sugar) can be replaced in a vinaigrette sauce instead of honey or sugar and you can also add a Tablespoon of soy sauce that compliments it well
I hope Michal has an answer for you, I asked around and the only thing I found was,
There is a “classic” salad of cabbage dressed with equal parts oil, brown sugar, soy sauce, and vinegar. If the brown sugar is substituted with silan, it could be what you are referring to and it is usually topped with sesame seeds.
I love this recipe and am going to make it. We have a friend who lives in Israel who introduced us to a recipe with sliced cabbage and date syrup? She says it is a staple in Israel, but OI haven’t been able to find it. Help?
