This recipe is truly “as easy as pie”! Now you can bake the same delicious apple pie without spending the extra time laboring over the crust. And best of all, these pies are in easy-to-serve single portions.

Deconstructed Apple Pie
Servings
Ingredients
- 4 Granny Smith apples peeled and cut into ½-inch pieces
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 4 tablespoons candied ginger coarsely chopped
- 13 ounces Tnuva Maadanot Pastry Dough defrosted
- 1 egg beaten with 1 teaspoon water
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- In a large sauce pan over medium high heat, sauté apples in olive oil, stirring occasionally. Sauté 5 to 8 minutes or until slightly softened but not mushy.
- Stir in lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger and cook 1 minute more. Evenly distribute filling between 4 (1-cup capacity) ramekins.
- Roll out puff pastry to about ⅛-inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Use a bowl, slightly larger than the size of your ramekins, to cut out 4 large circles. Brush the edges of each circle with egg wash and put on top of ramekins. Lightly press down to seal edges to ramekin and cut a small slit in the top to let steam out.
- Bake at 400°F for 14 to 18 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

LOL, yeah you can do that, I might add more apples just to be safe, but it will work, very fool proof type recipe.
Due to lack of ramekins, can I reconstruct this into a pie with the same quantity of ingredients?
You can get candied ginger in many stores, often by the dried fruit, I have found it at Trader Joe’s. I don’t have a recipe for sweet farfel topping, but I just posted a Passover apple crisp using nuts if that helps.
Where can you buy candied ginger?
Do you have a recipe for sweet farfel topping?

it is!
YAY Ari thanks so so much for your feedback!
I have to watch my diabetic daughter’s diet very closely. This fits the bill for the “goodie” side. I omit the crust (due to carbs) and this is still delicious.
everyone who saw this on my FB wanted to make it = even works on peseach – make a top of sweet matza farfel…
this looks delicious and easy!
This was both easy to make and absolutely delicious. A very fun twist on the classic apple pie! I like my apple pie extra sweet, so I added a little extra sugar since we used fresh apples (and not the canned apple pie filling that is already loaded with sugar). Great recipe!
