Red Lentil Dahl

  • 2 cup red lentils
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 tablespoon Chili Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 12 oz can tomato paste


Wash lentils well in cold water. Add to pot and cover with water. Simmer covered until the lentils are soft.

Add oil to large skillet and caramelize the onions.

In a mixing bowl, combine chili sauce, curry powder, turmeric, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, sugar, garlic and ginger. Blend well. When onions are cooked, add this mixture to the pan and cook on medium heat until well blended. Add can of tomato paste, reduce heat, leave on low until lentils are cooked.

When lentils are cooked, drain them, mix curry mixture into the lentils, and serve over fresh basmati rice.
