“I know what you do. But who are you?”
Julia Blum was a singer. A dancer. An actor. A Yale graduate with Broadway dreams.
But when someone asked her that question, she realized she had absolutely no idea how to answer it.
She didn’t know what she believed.
She didn’t know what she stood for.
And she definitely didn’t expect that figuring it out would change the entire direction of her life.
Julia ended up in Israel almost by accident.
She didn’t love traveling. She wasn’t looking for a spiritual experience. And when she first saw the Western Wall?
Nothing.
Then she went to a Shabbat dinner.
A child dropped an entire platter of chicken onto the floor. It shattered.
And instead of getting angry or embarrassed, the mother hugged her child. The father started singing. Everyone danced.
Julia was 22 years old, and she knew immediately: I want to know what they know.
What followed meant making some enormous choices.
Shabbos or Broadway.
Applause or something deeper.
Eventually, Julia stepped away from touring altogether to focus on the people who mattered most to her: her family.
Now, decades later, she’s a grandmother.
And she’s singing again.
But this time, she told me, the music isn’t there to prove her value. She already knows where that comes from.
Now she wants to use her voice to remind other people of theirs.
And before we finished, I asked Julia the same question that had stayed with her all those years:
Not what do you do.
Who are you?
Her answer now is VERY different.
Every Wednesday, I’ve got a new conversation waiting for you. Same time. Same place. Come sit with me.
