Making your own vanilla extract will really give you the most bang for your buck. Vanilla beans, the primary ingredient in pure vanilla essence, are very costly, thereby driving up the price of commercially prepared pure vanilla extract. Making your own, however, is a great way to have the best vanilla extract and go easier on your pocket as well. This recipe yields a cup of vanilla extract and will last you a very long time.
The three most popular types of vanilla beans are Madagascar, Mexican and Tahitian; each region produces beans which vary slightly in flavor.
