The Pillar of Salt: A “Salt-Sational” Shabbat Menu for Parsha Vayera
It is little wonder that so many Jewish people become lawyers! Abraham’s demanding negotiations with God over the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah—his fierce plea for righteousness and justice—have echoed for centuries, teaching us the courage of conviction.
Ultimately, Sodom and Gomorrah are judged beyond redemption and destroyed. As Lot and his family are given the chance to flee and start a new life, Lot’s wife famously looks back, instantly turning into a pillar of salt. This week, as we read Parsha Vayera, we remember this dramatic story with a Shabbat menu that will “turn around” your ordinary dinner into something wonderfully Salt-sational!
This menu honors the theme with dishes that feature the bold, pure flavor of salt—used for seasoning, curing, and creating incredible textures.
The Weekly Challah
While the main menu is bold, the Challah remains the soul of our table. Start with a perfect, fluffy loaf, ready to soak up all the savory flavors of the meal and get inspired by this parsha related shape.
BARBECUE FLAVORED ZUCCHINI CHIPS

While I sometimes go crazy with the Shabbat salad course, this week we keep the starting line simple and fun! These Barbecue Zucchini Chips are easy to prepare, require zero deep-frying, and offer a savory crunch. Serve them alongside a few simple, creamy spreads and dips (like hummus or dairy free tzatziki) for an appetizer that is flavorful and light enough to save room for the main event.

Pot Roast is the classic slow-cooked comfort food that works perfectly for Shabbat. The magic is in the braise: it takes minimal effort but results in tender, succulent meat infused with deep savory flavors. Braise it low and slow early Friday, and just keep it warm until serving—it’s stress-free entertaining at its best.
Southern-Style Sides (The Salt Factor)
GREEN BEANS AND BLACK EYED PEAS

This combination is Southern comfort at its finest! Try this delicious version of Black Eyed Peas with Green Beans for a perfect, hearty, and fiber-rich side dish. It offers a wonderful contrast in texture and a welcome savory break from the heavier beef.

Sweet potatoes are a Fall staple, but the Salt Baked method is truly transformative. It sounds dramatic, but baking the potatoes directly in a mound of salt creates a perfectly dry, intensely sweet, and fluffy interior. And don’t worry—you won’t eat all the salt! The salt crust falls right off the skin, sealing in moisture and flavor for an unforgettable side dish.
CHOCOLATE AND CARAMEL DIPPED APPLE POPS

We complete our “Salt-sational” menu with a sweet finish that gets a salty kick! These Apple Pops covered in caramel and chocolate are the perfect pareve Fall and American dessert. A small sprinkle of flaky sea salt on the caramel before it sets balances the sweetness beautifully. It’s a whimsical, hand-held treat that’s yummy and impressive!
Shabbat Shalom, and may your table be filled with wonder and warmth!
