Beer Battered Cod with Panko

Enjoy this semi traditional recipe for British fish and chips with a little added crunch from Panko. 

Keep this recipe parve by using soymilk mixed with lemon instead of buttermilk.

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 lb. cod fillets, cut into large pieces
  • 1/2 cup panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 12 oz. bottle of beer
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
  • Oil for frying


1 Soak fish in buttermilk or non dairy milk.
2 Mix panko, flour, beer, salt and parsley.
3 Heat oil in deep frying pan. Dredge fish into batter and then put into hot oil. When browned, flip over and then remove onto paper towels.
4 Serve with sauce of your choice, I like tartar sauce.  Use store bought fries or make your own fries
