Caramelized Butter Tarts


While watching a holiday episode of 'The Best Thing I Ever Ate' on the Food Network, chef Beau MacMillan gave away his recipe for the most delectible tarts and I knew I had to make them. They are so easy to make and you don't even have to make the crust if you don't want to. This butter tart tastes just like pecan pie! Try it for yourself. Check out for more of my recipes!

  • 12 ounces all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 4 drops vanilla extract
  • 9 ounces butter
  • 4 ounces eggs
  • 4 tsp water
  • *if you don''t want to make the crust yourself, just pie the premade tart shells


  • 1/3 cup butter/margarine
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp milk/soy milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 vanilla bean or 1 tsp vanilla extract


1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2 For the crust, combine the flour, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Add the lemon zest and vanilla.
3 Cut in the butter and mix until the butter is in pea-sized pieces.
4 Add the eggs and water and mix until combined.
5 Divide the dough into 18 pieces and roll each into a circle. Press the dough into tart pans.
6 Bake the tart crusts for 12 minutes. In the meantime, combine the below ingredients for the filling.
7 Melt the butter, brown sugar and milk in saucepan and stir until the sugar starts to dissolve.
8 Take the pan off the heat and whisk in the egg and raisins.
9 Take the crusts out of the oven and divide the filling among the tarts. Bake until bubbly, around 5-10 minutes.
