Ten Commandment Challah
It is traditional to bake a challah fashioned to resemble the 10 commandments for Shavuot. This challah represents the 10 commandments--- one letter per commandment. I can't imagine writing them all out in dough. The idea comes from Rabbi Dovid Meisels's wonderful book "Shavuos Secrets."
Think of this as edible arts and crafts, fun for you and the kids and certainly a wonderful centerpiece for the day we celebrate recieving the Torah.

Dissolved yeast in 1 cup luke warm water. Add 1/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup oil, 3 cups flour, 1 t salt and one egg yolk. Knead together to form dough. (if the dough is sticky add more flour)
Let rise until doubled. Take challah without a bracha. Roll out the dough into a circle. Roll two strips of dough to frame
the circle and another strip for the line bisecting the challah. Roll thin one inch strips of dough and shape into letters.
Let the dough rise again for 45-1 hour.
Using a paint brush, glaze the letters with egg yolk and then add poppy seed . Glaze the frame too. Leave the rest of the dough unglazed. Bake for 45 minutes at 175 C or 350 F in a preheated oven.
