Here is a quick, wholesome dessert trick that will transform your summer routine: turning plain frozen bananas into a soft-serve style ice cream with zero dairy, no added refined sugar, and pure fruit goodness.

This is the original base—made simply with ripe frozen bananas and a tiny splash of water or non-dairy milk to get things moving. While it is incredible all on its own, it also acts as a blank canvas for endless delicious flavor variations!

5 Ways to Change It Up!

Once you master the base, try adding these mix-ins directly into the blender during the last 30 seconds of processing:

Flavor VariationMix-In Ingredients
Chocolate Fudge Chunk2 tbsp raw cacao powder + 1 tbsp raw maple syrup + 2 tbsp chopped raw cacao nibs or vegan dark chocolate chips
Creamy Peanut Butter Twist2 tbsp natural peanut butter (or almond butter) + 1/2 tsp vanilla extract + a pinch of sea salt
Berry Bliss1/2 cup frozen wild blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries + 1 tsp lemon juice
Salted Caramel Pecan3 pitted Medjool dates + a pinch of coarse sea salt + 2 tbsp toasted pecan pieces
Tropical Mango Mint1/2 cup frozen mango chunks + 3-4 fresh mint leaves

Servings

2 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 large ripe bananas peeled, sliced into coin-sized rounds, and frozen solid (at least 4 hours)
  • 1 to 3 tablespoons water or unsweetened raw almond milk, just enough to blend

Instructions

  • Freeze the Bananas: Ensure your bananas are fully ripe with brown spots for maximum natural sweetness. Slice them into thin rounds before freezing so they blend smoothly without straining your machine.
  • Load the Food Processor: Place the frozen banana slices into a high-speed blender or heavy-duty food processor.
  • Pulse and Blend: Pulse a few times to break down the chunks. Add 1 tablespoon of water to start.
  • Scrape down the sides: Continue processing, stopping to scrape down the sides with a spatula as needed. At first, it will look crumbly, then like oatmeal, and suddenly—poof! It transforms into a smooth, thick, velvety soft-serve texture.
  • Serve or Freeze: Scoop into bowls and enjoy immediately for a soft-serve consistency, or transfer to a freezer-safe container for 30–45 minutes if you prefer scoopable hard-pack ice cream.
