Today’s post is a little different. Usually, I’m sharing ways to bring joy and flavor into your home, but sometimes, protecting that joy means standing up for the truth—even when it costs you everything.
I recently sat down for a No Reservations conversation with the incredibly brave Eve Barlow. Eve was a top music journalist and deputy editor at New Musical Express (NME), living a life many would dream of. But overnight, one sentence—one simple truth—changed her life forever.
One Tweet. Overnight Chaos.
In May 2020, after synagogues were vandalized in Los Angeles, Eve posted a tweet saying we shouldn’t fight hate with more hate. It should have been obvious, right? Instead, she was branded, blacklisted, and professionally gutted.
Eve joined me on the rooftop overlooking the Kotel to talk about the “before” and “after” of her life. We didn’t hold back. We talked about:
- The Cost of Courage: What happens when the industry you love turns its back on you for being Jewish.
- Growing up in Scotland: The “dual identity” many of us know—pride at home, but caution on the outside.
- The Gaslighting: Why the denial of truth and the betrayal of friends hurts more than the actual threats.
- Bearing Witness: Eve’s journey to the south of Israel after October 7th to document the stories others tried to ignore.
No Filters. No Fear.
Eve’s story isn’t just about “cancel culture.” It’s about the resilience of the Jewish spirit. She doesn’t ask “Why me?” She asks, “What can I do with this?” Standing there at the Aish World Center, where heaven and earth meet, Eve reminded me that telling the truth is the ultimate act of rebellion. It’s good for our souls to stop hiding and start standing tall.
