How to Survive the Shavuot All-Nighter (Without the Sugar Crash!)

Berry Popcorn Bars

Berry Popcorn Bars

It is a beautiful custom to stay up all night learning Torah on the first night of Shavuot. But let’s be real—between the late hour and the carb-heavy dairy dinners (hello, pasta and blintz marathons!), your body is basically begging for a nap by midnight.

I’m not here to change your traditions, but I do want to help you survive them! Whether you’re a seasoned all-night learner or this is your first time trying to stay awake until sunrise, here is my “Survival Guide” to keep your energy steady and your mind sharp.

1. Prioritize Protein (The Slow Burn)

Carbs give you a spark, but protein gives you the flame that lasts. Keep high-protein snacks nearby to nibble on throughout the night to keep your blood sugar from dipping.

GARBANZO BEAN COOKIES

I know it sounds crazy, but these are a healthy twist that provides a serious protein boost. They’re chewy, delicious, and “balaboosta-approved.”

Ok, I admit it, I am guilty of calling every holiday “my favorite holiday”. …

pesto pasta

Healthy Creamy Pesto Pasta

Pesto in cream sauce has always been my favorite comfort food—it’s creamy, …

This is the ultimate “study buddy.” It’s the perfect mix of protein and healthy fats, with enough flavor to keep your taste buds awake.

2. Choose the “Right” Kind of Sugar

We’ve all reached for the candy bowl at 2:00 AM, but processed sugar leads to a spectacular crash. Instead, lean on natural sugars from fruit and oats for a steady release of energy.

GRANOLA BARS

Oats, nuts, and dried fruit are the “Triple Threat” of energy. Cut them into bite-sized squares so you can graze all night long.

BERRY POPCORN BARS

Popcorn is the trendy way to do granola! These are light, crunchy, and a total crowd-pleaser.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Fatigue is often just dehydration in disguise. Skip the soda and keep the water flowing. If plain water feels boring, jazz it up!

Keep yourself hydrated with lots of water or even better add flavorings like lemon, mint, or ginger.

STRAWBERRY AND BLUEBERRY FLAVORED ICE CUBES

Drop these into your water bottle for a slow release of fresh strawberry and blueberry flavor.

WATERMELON RASPBERRY LEMONADE

This is so refreshing it’ll practically wake you up on its own.

4. Smart Caffeine (Avoid the Red Bull Jitters)

You could survive on energy drinks, but the “heart-pounding” jitters aren’t great for focus. I prefer Matcha or Green Tea. It provides a calmer, more focused “alertness” that won’t leave you shaking.

MATCHA TIRAMISU

A sophisticated way to get your caffeine fix during the break! Or try this Energizing Matcha Ice Cream for a cold wake-up call.

GREEN TEA OATMEAL

If you need a “midnight breakfast” to keep you going, this is nutritious, filling, and caffeinated.

No matter how long you’re staying up, remember that food is fuel! Pace yourself, drink your water, and enJOY the learning.

I try not to eat at night but when I do, it is usually a piece of fruit.

Lately, I’ve been eating a bowl of oatmeal at night as well as in the morning. I like adding diced apples, candied pecans, raisins, flax, chia and a drizzle of maple syrup.

I used to enjoy snacking on popcorn at night but lately i make a small salad with whatever happens to look good in the refrigerator and use some sort of balsamic vinegar dressing or one that is creamy and i don’t have that guilty feeling while i really enjoy myself snacking…..thank you for this opportunity.
