In this week’s parsha, Vayechi, we see Jacob’s days drawing to a close. As he gathers Joseph’s children, Ephraim and Manasseh, to give them that beautiful blessing we still recite for our sons every Friday night, he does something totally unexpected!
Jacob reverses the traditional order, raising the younger son above the older and upsetting the usual birthright. Even with his weary eyes, Jacob’s vision sees way beyond the natural order of things.
You know, in my house, the “natural order” is that dessert follows dinner. You’ll never overhear a parent say, “Eat your dessert and then you can have your chicken!”—except maybe on this Shabbat! Since Jacob liked to turn things around, we’re doing the same by bringing the sweet finish to the very beginning of the meal.

Who says you have to wait until the end of the night for a chocolate fix? (Usually me, lol) This Chocolate Chip Challah is so soft, sweet, and stuffed with melty chips, you won’t want to save it for dessert. It’s the perfect “twist” to start your Shabbat on a sweet note.

Is there anything more comforting than a golden bowl of soup? This is a total family favorite—it’s creamy, elegant, and so simple to whip up. I love how the natural sweetness of the squash pairs with the rest of this menu.

This Apple Cider Roast Chicken is everything a Shabbat main should be: juicy, fragrant, and surprisingly easy! The cider gives it a gorgeous glaze, and it serves as the most delicious savory-and-sweet canvas for a dollop of my favorite apple chutney.
Black Eyed Peas and Green Beans

We need something fresh and earthy to balance out those sweet apple notes! This side dish is quick, clean, and flavorful. The mix of textures makes it the perfect partner for the roast chicken.

This cake is a “doctored-up” cake mix secret, but I promise your guests will think you spent hours on it. It’s light, sophisticated, and that dusting of sugar makes it look like a winter wonderland.
