CHICKEN WINGS WITH GRILLED GINGER PLUM COULIS

Shavuos is my most favorite culinary holiday, cause I’m a recovering lifelong “vegetarian” who loves dairy like it’s going outta style. I started eating meat years ago for Hubby, it somehow meant so much to him that I share in his passion. I continued eating meat for my day job and on Shabbos. I can so totally appreciate the appeal of a succulent standing rib roast BUT my preference during the week is a pescatarian lifestyle.

Shavuos is also known as the “Cheesecake” Holiday but Hubby is a hater and so are the kids. So many a Shavuot I have found myself serving up a fleish fest for my meat loving family and knocking on neighbors doors for a slice of cheesecake (thank you ILANA WEISS!).

With Memorial Day and Shavuot practically falling on top of each other there is more than enough time (even for us dairy lovers) to enJOY our meat.

So for all you meat lovers out there, (and Hubby), this one’s for you!

I have been a vegetarian for 36 years and a vegan for 6 years. Every time I see you refer to yourself as a “recovering vegetarian,” like vegetarianism is some sort of horrible disease, quite frankly, it makes me cringe. You started eating meat because “it meant so much to your husband that you share his passion?” Why would you have to do that? My husband of 44 years continues to eat meat (he buys, cooks and cleans up after it himself,) and he has never discouraged me from following my own dietary preferences, just as I don’t insist that he follow mine. I also run a vegetarian group on Facebook. I share appropriate recipes there from your weekly newsletter, but obviously there are many that I cannot share.

I also feel strongly that eating meat goes against several Torah values, including Tz’aar Ba’alei Chaim, among others. If you have never read any of the works of Dr. Richard Schwartz on the topics of Judaism and Vegetarianism, I respectfully suggest that you do so. Thank you.
