BBQ Seitan Pizza

BBQ-Seitan-Pizza

I remember reading about BBQ pizza and thinking it sounded kind of odd and not so doable for a kosher person. Then a few months ago, my sister in law tried out this BBQ Seitan Pizza, replacing the chicken with the chewy seitan and I learned what the fuss was about it and now is part of my regular rotation, a big hit in my family.

Ingredients

  • 1 pizza dough store bought or homemade
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 package seitan or about 8 oz. homemade, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup Gold's BBQ sauce
  • 8 oz. cheese of choice, either shredded gouda or fresh Mozzarella
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • chopped cilantro for garnish

Preparation

Preheat oven to 500 degrees.  If you have a baking stone preheat it at the same time.

Place a large frying pan over medium high heat.  Pour in oil and cut up sietan.  Allow to brown for about 5 minutes, stirring as needed to prevent sticking.  Pour 1/2 cup BBQ sauce over seitan, turn off heat and stir until well coated.

Roll/stretch out one pizza crust. Place it on the hot pizza stone or a baking pan.

Spoon the rest of BBQ sauce on the crust and spread it evenly. Top sauce with the cheese then sprinkle on the seitan and thinly sliced red onion.

Bake for 15 to 17 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and toppings are bubbly.

Remove from the oven and sprinkle on plenty of chopped cilantro. Cut into squares and serve immediately.
