Healthyish Hamantashen

Whole wheat hamantashen and even spelt are not new, but this version is made with no processed sugar, only date honey.

Note: There is no baking powder in this recipe. We tested it with and without and preferred the slightly crispy texture when no baking powder was used.

  • 1 cup coconut oil or butter, room temp
  • ½ cup silan
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ½ cups whole spelt flour (plus more for rolling)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup fillings (peanut butter, all-natural preserves, pumpkin…)


  1. Mix coconut oil and silan in a medium bowl until well blended.
  2. Add vanilla and egg and stir well. Add flour and stir until dough forms. Cover and place in fridge 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 350℉. Line a baking sheet with parchment and prepare a work surface with flour.
  4. On a well floured surface, roll out dough and cut out circles. Fill with your preferred filling. Place on baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

Nutrition per cookie without filling, most fillings will add about 20 calories, which should keep each cookie to under 100 calories.
