Servings

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 cups water
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups lemon juice 6-7 lemons
  • freshly grated rind of one medium lemon
  • ice cubes
  • cold water or seltzer or club soda

Instructions

  • Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Boil the liquid 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the lemon juice and rind. Refrigerate for at least one hour or until very cold. Strain the mixture into a storage container. When you want some lemonade, place 5-6 ice cubes in a drinking glass. Fill the glass about 1/3 full with the lemon syrup, add water or seltzer (or liquid of choice) to the top of the glass, stir and drink.
  • Note: You may make a pitcher full of lemonade instead of serving the beverage individually. Place the cooled, strained syrup in a pitcher half filled with ice cubes. Add water or club soda to the top. You may garnish the beverage with sliced lemons and/or mint sprigs.

Yes — you can use less sugar. I always do, and in fact use more lemon too. This is more a recipe for what most people prefer. In our family we love SOUR. I don’t use splenda or any artificial sugar so I can’t advise you about that.

Thanks Ronnie, I always wanted to make my own…can we cut the sugar? I prefer cutting the sugar to adding splenda- how to make this less sugary?
