How to Break Your Fast

Spinach and cheese quiche

Spinach and Cheese Quiche

The end of a fast can lead you into an eating binge which will only make you sick.

The best thing to do after a fast, is to eat light.

If you don’t plan ahead, you will be tempted to just stuff your face with everything in sight, so let’s plan.

Start with a drink you like that has a little bit of natural sugar — orange or apple juice are perfect, Fresh Mint Lemonade is even better.

Most people take their inspiration from breakfast foods, since we really are breaking a fast every morning. Whole grains, eggs, yogurt, fruit are filling and won’t upset your stomach.

The key is to keep it light, avoid spicy or saucy foods and don’t over do it.

VEGETARIAN LENTIL SOUP

Even though soup is not what you typically eat for breakfast, it is highly recommended after a fast.  A hot soup really forces you to slow down and the lentils are light, but filling.

Serve with some crusty bread or the often obligatory bagels and lox and you can be done.

SPINACH AND CHEESE QUICHE

You could also serve this delicious quiche filled with spinach for an amazing make ahead hot or cold main to add to your break the fast.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Slice

Don’t eat extra dessert just because you fasted for 25 hours, but do make something really delicious that you can indulge in.  I like to make something dairy and refreshing like this peanut butter and jelly slice or a hot from the oven Chocolate Souffle can be fun, everything can be made ahead and then you can bake it up just before serving.

This year is the first year I had a very simple break fast and did not overeat . . . and didn’t have horrible stomach issues afterward. What a difference. Having a small break fast at home with only a few dishes instead of a big overblown thing with too much to choose from really was great!

A healthy way of breaking the fast could consist of nothing more than an apple or if time is more flexible, a bowl of fresh fruit salad.

One of the most refreshing ways to break a fast is with watermelon. It’s high water content helps quench your thirst so you don’t overeat to the point you feel sick. Try it, it really works.

The absolutely best thing for breaking a summer fast is a fruit smoothie. After tisha b’av, we made ours in the blender with frozen bananas, mango and melon (if I had strawberries, I would have put those in, too). Delicious and refreshing!

These look like good ideas. Last fast I made whole wheat pancakes, and we had sliced bananas and walnuts on top. We drizzled maple syrup over all of that. It was a great way to break a fast. My husband would break this fast with chicken & meat, if he could!

Toast and tea work for me. My husband, however, can just shovel ANYTHING in, in huge quantities, and his stomach does not complain. The quiche is worth trying – but can someone make those marshmallows for me and bring them over? They. look. divine!

My husband always breaks his fast on bagels and scrambled eggs, a glass of OJ, a glass of water and THEN he has a coffee. We hear of people breaking their fasts on heavy meals – meat, chicken, etc. The stomach needs to be treated gently after so long without sustenance!
