This is a great Rosh Hashanah sweet Challah with Dates and orange zest. I like to change things up for the holidays and make a sweeter challah, but raisins are getting boring so this year try dates and they go really well with some orange flavor too.

Servings

1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 large large egg
  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter cut up
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 11/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/3 cup dates chopped
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  • In 2 cup measuring cup, combine water with yeast and sugar. Allow to sit 5 minutes.
  • In large bowl combine flour and salt. Add egg, vegan butter and orange juice to the yeast mixture.
  • Pour liquid into dry ingredients and mix, adding flour if necessary. Knead dough for a few minutes. Add orange peel and dates and continue to knead until incorporated.
  • Place dough in oiled and floured ziplock bag and allow to rise in a warm place (I put it in the microwave) for about 1 1/2 hours.
  • Punch dough down, then shape as desired and place on greased baking sheet. Allow to rise 45minutes to 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375F. Lightly beat egg yolk and water. Brush over loaf. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until a deep golden brown and hollow sound when tapped.
  • If it is browning too quickly cover with foil. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
  • Enjoy this tasty sweet challah on Rosh Hashanah or any time.

I changed an ingredient to make it healthier. I substituted the lab created yeast for sourdough starter…

    Thank you for the recipe…
