POTATO AND CHEDDAR FRITTATA

Let’s chat.  Yesterday, Ronnie Fein of Hip Kosher fame shared her Yom Kippur Break Fast Ideas. Today we want to hear from all of you. What Yom Kippur break the fast recipes do you like to serve? Do you always have bagels and lox? Do you score big with a special souffle? Do you have any memorable stories to share?

Let me kick things off with an unforgettable Yom Kippur memory. I call it the Hurricane of Atonement. It was 7 years ago, a few months after my first child was born. We decided to go to my parents in Florida for Yom Kippur. Growing up, our family friend Maxine always had the best break fast in town – definitely worth the price of the plane ticket. This was also a good chance to show off the new baby to everyone and sneak away for a day at the beach before returning home. As it turns out, Hashem had other plans. Our friend Maxine did not plan on Jeanne coming by on Yom Kippur. Jeanne was a Category 3 hurricane that had already caused widespread damage in Haiti and was aiming straight for Fort Lauderdale. By mid-morning on the day of Yom Kippur, everyone was sent home before it would be too unsafe to be outside. We were stuck at my dad’s house for the rest of the fast, as 80+ mph winds shook the walls and windows inside. We were also woefully unprepared for a break fast.

The next morning, still hungry, I awoke to crystal clear blue skies and sunshine. We got to Maxine’s just in time for breakfast. And it tasted even better the next day.

Now, I stay away from Florida during holiday (and hurricane) season. But I still love a good break fast. Here are a few of my favorites…

Edamame, Cannelini and Pecorino Salad

I usually serve bagels and Israeli Salad along with coffee cake. This year we made potato soup with sharp cheddar cheese. We made it the day before and refigerated it and just heated it up when the fast was over. I’ve found that we cannot eat anything too heavy right away. We always serve coffee cake for dessert.

Good Rye Bread, scrambled eggs, and some yummy baked goods. And herring in cream sauce for my husband.

We’ve been through this too! Food is great the next day and also sharing the experience of the storm. Makes the holiday linger longer and that’s always great when it’s with family and good friends.

I just bought a whole bag of bagels and put it in the freezer for post YC. I’m also going to make a pureed veg soup out of all the vegies that are going bad in the fridge and freeze that too and then a green salad with some cubed feta and mayI’ll sprinkle za’atar on top to make it look like we’re in a restaurant. I usuallycan’t eat for a while after fasting, except for cocoa so I keep it simple.
