Now you can make your own onion soup mix so you don’t have to use the MSG that comes in so many of them. It looks like a lot of ingredients, but once you make a batch it can be stored in your cupboard like any other spice.

Can I leave out the turmeric so that it doesn’t taste like Indian food?

It helps with color too and doesn’t make it taste like Indian food but of course you should make it to your taste.

I recently made a pork roast incorporating your homemade onion soup mix. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, I’m never going back to the store bought packets again! Although it was delicious, I didn’t really care for the color and you could taste a hint of Indian food to me. I would like to cook this dish again, but maybe leave out the turmeric. Would you suggest to substitute another spice in place of the turmeric or not? If so, what do you recommend? Thanks in advance!

It does add a lot of the flavor here, but you can leave it out.

I would use between 3 and 4 tablespoons and it should work well without meat and you can add beans or root vegetables.

Your quinoa cholent recipe calls for one package of onion soup. Exactly how much of your homemade onion soup mix would that be? Also, Since I don’t eat meat, I’d either eliminate the meat or sub it with something else. Hope it would work. Thanks so much!

For this recipe, you need dried minced since it needs to stay with all the other dry ingredients and last in your pantry.

Funny – bc I don’t like it much anymore and only use it when my other set of measuring spoons are dirty… but I believe I picked it up at Bed Bath and Beyond YEARS! ago.

Just the other day I had a recipe that called for onion soup mix, but didn’t have any on hand. I do have all the ingredients and will mix up a batch now.

Of course it adds flavor and balances out all the other spices nicely but you can eliminate it if you’d like.

I am NOT sure what to do NOW that I made the mix. Do I use it AS soup? Like add water? or what? Um, really want to know cause I made the mix. I don’t know HOW MUCH mix to water, or to other liquid or to what to do with it. I am lost. Please be very informative if you can be, I just have this mix sitting around now and don’t know how to use it. Thanks Much, Shalom
