When Your Dream Changes: Tamir Goodman on Losing Everything and Finding More

Every so often, you meet someone whose story has been told a thousand times by the world—but you realize the realstory, the heart of it, has barely been touched.

This week on No Reservations, I sat down with Tamir Goodman. You might remember him as “The Jewish Jordan”—the 17-year-old basketball phenom who took the world by storm because he refused to play on Shabbat. But as we sat on the Aish rooftop overlooking the Kotel, I realized that being turned into a symbol at such a young age comes with a heavy price.

Watch our deep-dive conversation with Tamir Goodman right here!

More Than Just a Uniform

Tamir and I didn’t just talk about basketball. We talked about what happens when the world wants you to be a “symbol” instead of a person. We talked about the pressure, the projections, and the moment he realized he never played another college game again.

This isn’t just a sports story. It’s a story about Emunah (faith) and what it looks like to stay true to yourself when the narrative around you starts to shift. We dove into:

  • The Non-Negotiables: What it was really like to tell the world that Shabbat came before the game.
  • The Discipline of the Soul: How the structure of an athlete’s life—the food, the schedule, the focus—is actually deeply spiritual.
  • Rebuilding from Scratch: What happens when the uniform is gone, the story changes, and you have to find out who you are without the “fame.”
  • Choosing Happiness: How Tamir found the strength to say, “I choose to be happy,” even when things didn’t go according to the world’s plan.

No Filters. No Fear.

Tamir reminds us that we all wear different “uniforms” in life, but our identity comes from somewhere much deeper. Standing there at the Aish World Center, he shared how everything can change in the blink of an eye—and why that’s exactly why we have to “win the day” right now.

It’s good for all of us to remember that we aren’t defined by our successes or our failures, but by our connection to Hashem and our commitment to our values. 🕍
