One of the most beautiful passages in this week’s parsha, concerns the bird and her young. We are told: If you should encounter a bird’s nest and the mother is sitting with her baby birds or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother upon the young, but should send the mother away before taking any eggs. The reward for this act of compassion is a long life. Live long and prosper.
This week we’re going to give the birds a break, but I can’t resist the opportunity to include a few nests and egg recipes that will leave your guests squawking for more.
The Weekly Challah

We’re starting our meal with an iconic nod to the parsha. Creamy, tangy, and topped with a dusting of paprika, deviled eggs are a timeless starter that everyone loves to pop into their mouth while catching up over Challah.

More Love
Served right alongside the eggs, this icy-cold gazpacho is the ultimate antidote to late-summer heat. The combination of crisp cucumber and sweet melon is impossibly refreshing and keeps the pre-dinner spread light and elegant.

Here is our ultimate tribute to the bird’s nest! Shredded phyllo dough (kadaif) is baked into golden, crispy “nests” and filled with rich, spiced Middle Eastern ground lamb. It brings authentic Israeli flair to your Shabbat table and looks like it came straight out of a high-end restaurant.

Because everyone loves food on a stick! To round out the main course, these chicken or beef skewers are seasoned with a aromatic Jerusalem Mixed Grill spice blend, adding a savory, smoky bite that pairs perfectly with the lamb nests.
Israeli Couscous with Red Peppers
Puffy, toasted Israeli couscous (ptitim) tossed with sweet diced red peppers adds a vibrant pop of red to your plate. It’s simple, kid-friendly, and absorbs the juices from the skewers and lamb beautifully.

To capture the final harvest of the season, a quick sauté of late-summer zucchini, squash, and cherry tomatoes keeps the plate balanced, colorful, and light.

We’re ending the meal with one final, sweet nod to the parsha. Crisp phyllo nests are filled with a tropical mixture of fresh mango and creamy banana. It’s light, fruit-forward, and the perfect sweet crunch to end an end-of-summer Shabbat.
