I love to dress up my traditional gefilte fish with this easy simple trick that turns the outside red and don’t forget the flavored carrots and onions.

Many American Passover products [Gold’s Borscht] is NOT available in the Jerusalem area. Time to open a Cosco MK Smotrich as you mentioned.

Gefilte fish is NOT a species of fish. Rather, it is a combination of several types of ground up fish, in this case to make a loaf 🙂 Traditional Gefilte Fish is made of whitefish, pike or carp ground with onions and matzoh meal. Some people put in an egg. There are a plethora of Gefilte Fish recipies online; just be sure you use Matzah Meal for Passover and not bread crumbs to bind it. Once made you can wrap in Parchment paper and freeze and then follow the instructions listed here to color the uutside. It is “cutzie” but certainly will not enhance the flavor of your home made Gefilte fish. Use a meat grinder to grind the fish. Happy Cooking!

Keep the paper on, the liquid will go through.

Frozen Fish comes wrapped in a thin paper. Do you remove the paper or does the red liquid penetrate through the paper?

SUPER smart/resourceful. I am not sure if it will stain/color the outside of the fish in the same way BUT if you try it PLEASE let us know.

Given the season, do you think I could substitute borscht with pomegranate juice???

I often make gefilte fish mold (from scratch) that is absolutely wonderful and all my guests rave about it.. however, some times I’d like to vary it up. Do you think I could roll my raw mixture in parchment paper, freeze, then do this with it?

oy so sorry but that won’t work — where do you live? I can maybe suggest a store or online delivery service for the frozen gefilte

I can’t seem to find frozen gefilte fish.
Can I buy a fresh one and then freeze it to make the pink rimmed gefilte fish?

This looks so pretty. I have some homemade borscht in the freezer. Wonder if it would work.

Trying to think what might have gone wrong for you. Did you keep the wrapper on? Doing so ensures that just the “rim” outside turns pink but the inside stays super white, just like the video. Depending on the size of your pan, if the fish is not completely immersed in the borscht then flip it about halfway through for an even color. I also use Gold’s a really pinkish red borshct. Please let me know.

I made this and although it tasted very good, the fish was NOT pink rimmed. It was sort of a muddy, brownish color all the way through.
    A disappointment.
