The Jewish holidays are a beautiful, joyous time—but let’s be honest, they’re also a time of serious culinary excess. Between Rosh Hashanah feasts, break-fast spreads, Sukkah meals, and all those extra holiday sweets, our bodies and our routines take a hit.
You might be feeling sluggish, a little heavy, or just plain over rich food. That’s totally normal! And it means now is the perfect time to give your body a little break and a big dose of good nutrition.
When I talk about a “detox,” I’m not talking about juice cleanses, strange powders, or punishing restrictions. As a registered dietitian, I know that your body has a magnificent, built-in detox system (hello, liver and kidneys!). What they really need from us after a stretch of indulgence is support—not deprivation.
Our goal for the next one to two weeks is to gently guide ourselves back to the healthy eating habits we know and love. More importantly, it’s about establishing those healthy habits as your everyday normal.
5 Simple Ways to Reset Your Body
This reset is all about adding good things back into your diet and routine, not just taking things away. Think of it as hitting the “refresh” button on your plate.
1. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job

After all the wine, sodas, and salty holiday foods, your body is probably crying out for water. Water is absolutely essential for flushing out waste and keeping everything running smoothly.
Action Plan: Start your morning with a big glass of water (maybe with a slice of lemon!) before your coffee. Keep a water bottle with you all day. Aim for plain water, not sugary drinks. You’ll be amazed at how quickly this simple change boosts your energy. If you find plain water boring, check out How to Flavor Your Water for ways to make hydration exciting and delicious and even extra nutritious!

2. Embrace the “Green & Bright”
The holidays often feature a lot of beige (kugel, challah, roasted potatoes). It’s time to bring back the color! Think of fresh fruits and vegetables as a gift to your digestive system. They are packed with fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants that help your body do its best work.
Action Plan: Make half your plate at lunch and dinner vegetables. Steam them, roast them simply with a little olive oil and salt, or throw together a big, satisfying salad. For inspiration, check out these vibrant, fiber-rich recipes:

3. Focus on Whole, Unprocessed Foods
Give your digestion a break by choosing foods in their most natural state. This means temporarily pulling back on the heavy sauces, packaged snacks, and deep-fried items.
Action Plan: Choose lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs, legumes) and pair them with whole grains and lots of those colorful veggies. These foods are satisfying, nutrient-dense, and keep your energy stable. Try these simple, wholesome dinner recipes that are big on flavor and light on prep:

4. Sleep Off the Stress
The holidays are also exhausting! Poor sleep hinders your body’s ability to repair and regulate metabolism. Prioritizing rest is one of the most powerful “detox” moves you can make.
Action Plan: Try to be in bed 30 minutes earlier than usual for the next week. Turn off screens an hour before you want to fall asleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality rest. You’ll wake up feeling more refreshed and less prone to grabbing a sugary pick-me-up.
5. Move Your Body (Gently!)
You don’t need a grueling gym session. Movement helps with circulation, mood, and—yes—digestion.
Action Plan: Take a 20-minute walk after dinner. It’s a wonderful way to reconnect with your family and aids in digestion. Or, try a gentle stretching or yoga routine in the morning. Consistency beats intensity, especially when you’re resetting your routine.
